Philosophy

At Abbey’s Place Childcare Centres’ we believe that Early Childhood Education is an important part of a child’s learning and development.

We believe that providing opportunities for children to take control of their own learning is vital.

Children are encouraged to learn at their own pace in a safe, consistent, trusting environment which is meaningful to children, allowing us to build the foundations for their lifelong learning.

Our philosophy is based on a socio cultural context in which children learn through socialization and play with and alongside other more capable peers and adults.

Spontaneous play is recognised as “free play”, “free play” stems from the interests of the children and this is supported, affirmed and extended by competent teachers through a planned process of assessment and evaluation which shows progression in learning and development and creates an emergent curriculum.

Staff, children, parents and whānau are encouraged to use te reo Māori, tikanga and cultural practices that reflect the dual heritage of Aotearoa/New Zealand and the Treaty of Waitangi. Likewise we acknowledge other cultures that contribute to our setting.

Our Team

Each centre has a small team of qualified, registered teachers and teachers in training who are passionate about providing quality care and education for young children and work well together planning and evaluating learning and development programs for the children in their care. Our teachers are very focused on improving their teaching practice through ongoing professional development, self-review and reflection. All teachers work towards implementing the Early Childhood Curriculum document Te Whāriki He Whāriki Mātauranga mō ngā Mokopuna o Aotearoa (Ministry of Education, 1996).

Environment

The environment at Abbey’s Place promotes safety and wellbeing and provides for interactive indoor and outdoor play and exploration, with a variety of stimulating equipment and resources. We respect the dual heritage of Aotearoa/New Zealand and other cultures that contribute to our setting and incorporate resources into our environment that reflect this.

Program

Abbey’s place childcare centres’ are proud to offer an inclusive, stimulating early childhood experience for children, including a wide variety of learning activities, Four year old program which helps to prepare children for school, primary caregivers for children under the age of two. Our program follows the interests of the children attending the centre and extends their current skills and knowledge. Both centres’ take their children on regular excursions in the local community and on Centre trips to explore their interests and develop new knowledge of Aotearoa.
